Suspended Coffee Society Melbourne

One for you, and one for someone else

What is a suspended coffee?

It’s simple – people pay in advance for a coffee meant for someone who can not afford a warm beverage. You purchase 2 coffees, 1 for yourself and 1 to be held as a “Suspended Coffee”. Someone who needs the coffee is welcome to come and ask if there are any “Suspended Coffees” available.

How we started

The tradition began in the working-class cafés of Naples, where someone who had experienced good luck would order a sospeso, paying the price of two coffees but receiving and consuming only one. A person in need enquiring if there was a sospeso available would then be served a coffee for free.

On 29th of March 2013 Declan Jacobs & Jett Mahmud were inspired by what they had recently heard from their Italian friends who told them about suspended coffee and set up a facebook page to let people know about it. Since then it has gone way past any of their wildest dreams. The amount of people who have grasped the idea & run with it is totally amazing.

How we're going

Since we've started in 2013, we've together helped thousands of Australians have a warm cup of coffee!
